My School Chums
April 7th, 2009
From Hyndland Primary School in Glasgow, Scotland, 1977:
Apparently, I only had four chums. I have no idea what happened to the last three, but the first — Deborah (whose name I, evidently, could not spell) — I’m still in touch with today. (In fact, I attended her wedding just last year in Scotland.)

Why thank you, dear Margaret. I’m sure to some people it looks like I must have been in some sort of MBA school for 6-year-olds, but back in the day, ties were a mandatory part of the school uniforms at many Scottish public schools. Good times, no?

If grade school was as fun for you as it was for me, then “good times” might not be an accurate description, but you are very cute and I am going back to give you a hug as soon as I master the space/time continuum.

Oh, and I know about British school ties from the limerick:
The Deacon undressed with heaving breast,
the bishop’s wife to lie on.
He thought it crude to do it nude
so he kept his old school tie on.
